John Haycock - Africa Explorer
Business: Africa Explorer is a small company offering tailor-made tours to most countries in southern Africa. We specialise in finding good value places where you are a name not a room number, be they lodges in remote game reserves, country hotels or city B&Bs.

Africa is special because: Apart from the obvious ‐ animals, scenery and excitement ‐ it is the people who make it perfect, from the smile at the airport to the expert knowledge of the taxi or jeep driver, the skill of the ranger, chefs and camp staff and the warmth of the welcome.

Latest buzz: Footballs for fun (www.footballsforfun.com), a unique programme to help tourists take a meaningful gift to Africans and help with worthwhile charities at the same time.

Best for wildlife: For me, the desert, so it’s Kgalagadi or anywhere in Namibia; but Madikwe runs it close, as does Kutundala in Zambia.

Favourite place to relax: A sundowner on top of Table Mountain, and a swim with Hylton Ross in Fish Hoek, our annual Midsummer’s Day indulgence.

The things I’d miss most about Africa: The light, the sky, the colours.

Top tip for a first-time visitor: Slow down and let Africa come to you.

Safari wish-list: Victoria Falls ‐ it’s the heart of Africa, offering Botswana, Zambia or Namibia within a hour.
