Anke Cowan - Kafunta Lodge

Business:
Kafunta River Lodge is our home and the base for our safari operation. We first moved to the valley in 1993 and took on the lodge in 1997. We have since added a bush camp to our operation and offer regular mobile safaris to North Luangwa.

First taste of Africa: My husband Ron and I drove from Morocco to Zimbabwe in 1990‐91. During this 15-month trip we got to see many different faces of Africa.

What I miss about Africa when I’m not there: Everything! Guests often ask me what I miss ‘from home’ (meaning Germany) and I can never think of anything.

My six-year-old son loves Africa because: He loves exploring and collecting feathers and bones from the bush: it’s his playground. He dreams of becoming a guide and a ranger!

What makes Luangwa special: The abundance of wildlife in such a beautiful landscape and the magnificent Luangwa River.

Our guests most appreciate: Visiting a true wilderness location ‐ hippos only metres away during dinner, elephants feeding outside the chalets in the middle of the night, returning from their game drives with great stories...

I could never tire of: Living in the bush and hearing the wildlife just outside the house ‐ lions roaring, hyenas calling and birds singing.
