| The New Imax Film: Wild Safari |

When searching for a concept for his new IMAX movie about South Africa, 3D film maker Ben Stassen, decided to keep things simple. “I’d never been on safari before”, he explains, “and I found the idea of going on a game drive extremely exciting. So, I thought, let’s convey that excitement. Let’s put the viewer in the back seat of an open vehicle, with a wildlife expert and a first class spotter in front, and send them on a journey from one end of the country to the other.” The result, Wild Safari, produced in partnership with South African Tourism and showing at IMAX cinemas in the UK, is incredible. The medium is so compelling that you can almost smell the dusty grass as the vehicle on screen bumps its way past dozing leopards and curious giraffe. “Most wildlife documentaries we see on TV focus on animal behaviour, but I wanted to bring the audience face to face with the animals, observing these extraordinary creatures from very close range”, says Ben. Creating the world’s first 3D wildlife film was, technically, a considerable challenge. “The camera equipment is extremely noisy”, Ben explains, “as bad as taking a power drill on safari with you. We’d been advised that it might take a long time for the animals to get used to us. But, amazingly, they seemed to recognise us as a non-threatening presence.” To Win Imax Tickets click here! |
