Phumulani Lodge and Singita are the latest in a select group of establishments to be certified by South Africa’s Fair Trade in Tourism body (FTTSA).
Phumulani Lodge, situated very close to the Kruger National Park’s Numbi Gate, is a community-owned project, created by the late Chief Mdluli for his people. His dream was that tourism would one day ensure local employment and development. Singita is a spectacular group of lodges in the Kruger National Park and the adjoining Singita Private Game Reserve. Both businesses share a commitment to equity and ethical business practice.
Amos Mdluli, who manages Phulumani Lodge on behalf of the Mdluli Trust, says: “The reason we wanted to be FTTSA-certified was to encourage others to practice fair trade. We want to set an example to the tourism industry.”
For Mark Witney, General Manager of the Singita Group, the decision to apply for the scheme was inspired by the fact that that more and more guests were showing an interest in responsible tourism and fair trade. “We realised that our daily business practices, community projects and local Shangaan culture are of great interest to the consumer”, he explains. www.travelsa.co.za/phulumanilodge; www.singita.com
