| Edition 36: Rich man's playground |

Over the 26 years I have been travelling to Africa, I’ve watched the tourist industry improve beyond recognition, especially in East Africa.
But as the days of reasonably priced safaris are becoming something of a rarity, Africa seems to be becoming a rich man’s playground. This raises the question: is Africa’s wildlife only for those who can afford to see it? And should safari really be about luxury? Surely there should be camps and lodges catering for those seeking comfort as opposed to luxury, or is this a case of the money-men dictating what a safari should be? The first time I visited Africa in 1980, I quickly became aware how privileged I was to experience its wonderful wildlife while many of the local people had never even seen a gazelle. I would like to think that my love affair with this amazing continent will continue, but I fear that in the present climate this won’t be possible for much longer. Alan Jeffrey, UK |
