Business: I own Luangwa Wilderness Lodge in Luambe National Park, Zambia. I’m also the secretary of Conservation Luambe, which is dedicated to helping develop the national park.
What inspired you to first go on a safari? As a child I watched Daktari and Born Free, and was fascinated by the spirit of Africa. So I studied veterinary medicine, with the plan to work in Kenya, which eventually I did.
Most memorable moment on safari: Although I was once confronted by a lioness that was no more that 12 feet away from me I’d actually say my most memorable moment was when I was ‘attacked’ by a baby warthog. He was trying to protect the rest of his litter while Mum was away. While no bigger than a puppy, he was so brave.
What makes Africa special for you? Africa is always a challenge. It’s still a wild and rhythmic continent, with unpredictable ups and downs. That’s why it is so vibrant.
What’s your favourite place in Africa? It used to be Kenya, because of its clear skies and wide-open landscapes – but now I would say Zambia because it’s still the kind of Africa I knew 30 years ago.
Top tip: In Germany, most people recommend Namibia as a good place to start, with its European feel, good roads and well-kept lodges. But I’d always say to push your own boundaries as far as you dare as that’s likely to be truly rewarding.
Where would you like to safari next? Tanzania is high on my list. I’ve heard and seen so much about the Serengeti, but I just have to see it for myself at least once… Although I wish there were as few tourists there as at Luambe!
