Tom Heineken, KaingU Lodge
Business: I’m the resident partner of KaingU Lodge on the central edge of Kafue National Park in Zambia. I designed and built the lodge from scratch in 1999.

What was your first safari experience? During my nature conservation studies, back in 1967, I visited Knysna in my native South Africa. I knew there and then what I was destined to do.

What do you love most about your work? I love to share the wonders of the environment with others. For me it’s my everyday life, but for others it can be a short, yet, life-enhancing, experience.

What is your favourite animal? It may sound corny, but I like them all. If pushed, I’d say the impala. They’re easy to see and they lead intriguing social lives!

Have you had any scary animal encounters? One late night in Botswana our vehicle was surrounded by an elephant herd, and without intending to, we separated a calf from his mother. The commotion and consternation
were unbelievable.
