Grant Nel - Linyanti Explorations
Business: We’ve been involved in Botswana’s photographic safari industry for more than 30 years. Currently we operate three small, luxury private camps and a ‘fly camp’ walking safari on the Selinda.

The Selinda is a 1350 square kilometre private wildlife reserve that straddles the Selinda Spillway, an ephemeral watercourse stretching from the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti Swamps in northern Botswana.

Why the Linyanti? It’s remote, unspoilt by too many human footprints and the animal life is fantastically dense and diverse. Oh, and the scenery isn’t too shabby either!

Most memorable moment on safari: There are many, but the 10 September 1997 really stands out. More than a single moment, it was a 24-hour period of predator action: three lion kills (one including a three-hour battle with a hippo), dozens of scavenging hyena, two leopards, a cheetah kill and a pack of wild dog running down an adult kudu. Unbelievably, it all happened within sight of Selinda Camp’s dining room!

Favourite safari activity: It must be walking. Nothing can top the tactile experience of being in the bush on foot. I liken a game drive to watching a great movie, whereas a walking safari is more like reading the original book – I’ve always preferred the book.

Most misunderstood aspect of Africa: How safe it is to visit.

I can’t tire of seeing: Elephants – anytime, anywhere.

Top tip: Don’t go on a safari aiming to tick off your check list. The fewer the expectations the greater the experience.

Safari wish-list: Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. I would definitely like to spend some time with our closest relatives.
