Anita Powell - Small World Marketing

Business:  In January 2006 I set up Small World Marketing, a representation company offering sales, marketing and PR services to African properties. Prior to that I managed a lodge, worked at Travel Africa and was the UK manager for the Kenya Tourist Board.

Best thing about my job:  The variety of the work. Our roles range from helping to create a logo and designing brochures to sending sales consultants and journalists to visit the lodges. We have been involved with nearly all of our clients from the building process, therefore have an enormous pride in their progress and success.

Best safari experience: In 2004 we organised a trip to Kenya for the Nairobi Safari Sevens rugby competition, followed by a safari afterwards. There were 17 friends in total. Witnessing close friends experiencing the magic of a safari for the first time was fantastic.

Most important thing to look for in a lodge: Value for money. Whether it’s £1000 per night or £50 per night, it’s got to deliver great value.

I never travel without: A kikoy. It doubles up as a scarf, towel, sunshade and dirty washing holder.

Place most like to visit: Greystoke, Mahale. I love the idea of going somewhere that can offer both chimpanzee-trekking and the beach!

What makes a good lodge great:  The people. Good management is crucial, but every member of staff adds to the experience.

Most memorable occasion on safari:  During our honeymoon this year, we stayed at Shompole in southern Kenya. The lodge organised for us to have a Maasai blessing. Being blessed by the witch doctor while 25 fully-decorated Maasai men and women danced for us was breathtaking.
