Fair Trade Sharks
Edition 42: Spring 2008

Dyer Island Cruises and their shark-diving arm Marine Dynamics have become the first cage-diving operation to receive certification from Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA). Besides whale watching and shark diving, they work extensively in marine conservation and support local communities with several education and craft projects. They operate from Gansbaai in the Western Cape, some 180km southeast of Cape Town.

FTTSA encourages fair and responsible business and has stringent criteria that companies must meet to receive accreditation:
• Fair wages and working conditions, fair operations, purchasing and distribution of benefits
• Ethical business practice
• Respect for human rights, culture and the environment

Kudos to Aquila
Aquila Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape has been honoured by the Campaign Against Canned Hunting (CACH) for its lion conservation. To further their work, they are building a 35ha rehabilitation centre, which will also include facilities for raptors and a veterinary clinic.
