Free admission The exhibition brings together major works by 12 artists who best represent the innovative and dynamic artistic practices across the African continent and the African diasporas. The Really Wild Picture Show Tuesday 20 May – Wednesday 21 May, The Gallery, London SW5. £15, £10. Presented by Friends of Conservation (FOC), this is a great exhibition of spectacular wildlife photography. All works will be for sale and proceeds will support the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). It’s also a unique opportunity to meet Dr Laurie Marker, founder of the CCF. Earthwatch Volunteer Open Days Saturday 12 April and Saturday 10 May, 10am-1pm, Prama House, Oxford OX2. Free admission. These days are intended for those of you who are new to Earthwatch. You will be given the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the many expeditions on our programme, chat with past volunteers and talk through the specifics of volunteering with our experienced staff. You should ask for your ticket in advance ( ), as numbers will be strictly limited. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuits will be freely available on the day. Discovering Mozambique Wednesday 4 June, 7pm, RGS, London SW7. £10 for RGS/IBG members. Non-members £15. Join Lonely Planet’s Mary Fitzpatrick and Expert Africa’s Chris McIntyre in taking an intimate look at Mozambique. Everthing from it’s culture to the exceptional diving opportunities will be explored. The Search for the Source of the Nile Tuesday 10 June and Tuesday 17 June, 2.30pm, RGS, London SW7. Free to RGS members and educational users. Non-members £5. Led by a member of the Collections’ team, this showcase re-traces the search for the source of the mighty Nile. There will be access to the original manuscript mapping, artefacts and photographs, and you’ll hear of the early achievements of John Hanning Speke, Richard Francis Burton, David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. Music Blues: Back to the Source Monday 28 April, 8pm, Barbican Hall, London EC2Y. £20, £10. Consisting of two fascinating parts, this show is a must for any fan of the blues. Award-winning blues banjoist Otis Taylor takes you on a musical voyage, which celebrates the one instrument to survive the Atlantic slave trade: the banjo. Also on stage is Bassekou Kouyate of Mali – he’s living proof that one of the sources of the blues lies in his home region of Segu. The master improviser has championed the ngoni, the ancestor of the banjo over many years.
