Edition 45: Winter 2008/9 Cosy Onkoshi Onkoshi Camp is the latest Namibia Wildlife Resort (NWR) to open within Etosha National Park.
Set on the rim of the Etosha Pan, it is heralded as a low impact, environmentally friendly camp. With only 15 units, and located out of view of tourist routes, it offers the most personal and tranquil accommodation option within the famed park. All rooms are built on elevated wooden decks, with thatched roofs, canvas walls and large, wooden-framed retractable doors allowing spectacular panoramic views over the pan. Rooms are equipped with locally-crafted fittings and furnishings, blending metal, wood and natural fabrics. Except in the honeymoon chalet, there is a sleeper couch in all suites, which are perfect for children (note: no children under the age of 6 are permitted). In line with NWR’s environmental policy, solar energy is being used to provide most of the power requirements of the camp. More information can be found at www.nwr.com.na New camp at Ol Pejata Located on the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy at the foot of Mount Kenya, Kicheche Laikipia Camp offers six spacious tents with views across a permanent waterhole. Each tent has a generous and shaded verandah, a tastefully decorated interior with a shower and flush toilet. The main area is a timber and canvas framed space anchored at both ends by huge stone fireplaces. The Kicheche team have taken the best design aspects from their Mara Bush Camp and created another low-impact safari retreat. As is normal for Kicheche guests, guided activities – game drives, night drives and guided walks – are totally flexible and aim to maximise the time spent watching Africa’s fascinating wildlife. Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed as a moveable feast on the open plains. The 90,000ha conservancy is home to East Africa’s largest population of black rhino as well as rare species like white rhino, Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest and Beisa oryx. The diverse range of species also includes all the big cats, elephants, reticulated giraffe and a number of primates including the Patas monkey. Kicheche Laikipia Camp opens on the 1 December 2008.
