Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition
From Friday 23 October, entry 10am-5pm daily, National History Museum, London SW7. £9, senior/child £4.50.


Come and see the winning and commended images from the 2009 competition when the stunning exhibition opens at the Natural History Museum on 23 October. This year’s exhibition is housed in a bigger gallery and features larger format images. Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife magazine. From Tsunami to Drought
Thursday 19 November, 7pm, Royal Geographical Society, London SW7 2AR; free to Earthwatch donors and students – otherwise entry by donation at door.


While the devastating impacts of the 2004 tsunami and the alarmingly frequent incidence of flooding loom large in our minds, another age-old scourge – drought – is predicted to become an increasingly universal problem. What can be done before it is too late? Four enterprising speakers will outline their ingenious solutions to this looming crisis, before being interrogated Dragon’s Den-style by a panel of experts to establish the practicalities of their proposals.

Gorillas: Gentle Giants

Travel Africa are hosting gorilla experts Ian Redmond OBE and Letitia Farris-Toussaint, and National Geographic photographer Martin Harvey. Ian, who was mentored by the late Dian Fossey, has spent more than 30 years working with gorillas, while Letitia and Martin have recently teamed up to produce the enthralling new book Gorillas: The Gentle Giants. Besides anecdotes of his extensive experiences with gorillas, Ian will discuss what needs to be done to ensure their survival. A portion of the proceeds will go the The Gorilla Organisation (www.gorillas.org).

Footballs For Fun

FIFA, together with the South Africa High Commission, are having a party in Trafalgar Square to coincide with the final draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup of Football. On hand will be the charity Footballs For Fun – they produce footballs for travellers to give to African younsters, with all profits helping needy or
sick children.

Mara Watch 09

Travel Africa presents award-winning wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein in the prestigious Ondaatje Theatre. He’ll take those in attendance on an unforgettable photographic journey through the Masai Mara. He’ll be accompanied by travel editor and radio host Simon Calder, and will be introduced by acclaimed travel journalist Chris Haslam. There will also be a charity auction in the aid of the Exodus Aitong project.

Animals, Anthu and Ancestors

Speaker Brian Morris, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Goldsmiths College, University of London, will help to inform guests about the complex factors that motivate Malawians in their relationships with, and attitudes to, the wildlife around them.
