My Africa: Rob Fynn, Rob Fynn Private Guided Safaris

Edition 48: Autumn 2009

My first footsep in Africa... This would really go back to my great-great-great-great-grandfather arriving in Cape Town and having his British ship captured by the Dutch in 1803. My first steps in Africa were my first anywhere – they took place in (then) Rhodesia.

My favourite footstep in Africa... Following the Zambezi valley from Victoria Falls through Lake Kariba to the lower sections of the river, which swirl their way through one of the last true African wilds.

My fab five... Elephants (loyal), lions (brave), warthogs (easy come, easy go attitude), ground hornbills (such characters) and
pythons (grace and beauty).

I'm still hoping to see... Walia ibex – there are only 500 or so left in the world. They’re found in the dramatic surrounds of Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia.

... is at the top of my African travel wishlist... Omo National Park in southern Ethiopia. It inspired my safari career 38 years ago and I would love to see it again knowing that it is still so breathtakingly unspoilt.

My best cultural experience in Africa... Remote rural communities, where life still exists as it always has. Where standing by your neighbour and receiving travellers is held in high regard.

My favourite activity in Africa... Canoeing the Zambezi. Nothing can beat the entertainment value, variety of wildlife and scenery, and the sheer camaraderie of fellow adventurers.
