Edition 54: Botswana's Tuli Block
It’s a pity that you couldn’t have driven the Land Rover (what a fine vehicle, by the way) from page 125 in your ‘Essential Africa: Botswana’ column (Ed 52, Autumn 2010) and parked it somewhere on page 124.

That would then have left you room for inserting text about the Tuli Block in eastern Botswana. Considering there have been a couple of queries about proper night drives and places to stay that don’t bankrupt you, it would have been a great inclusion. We have been there a few times, and it certainly has wonderful options for you to choose. We’ve stayed at a gem of a place called Tuli Safari Lodge – its main camp is in a beautifully shady spot, although away from the Limpopo River. We were looked after so well, and everything was done quietly and efficiently. There are various activities on offer including the aforementioned night drives.

The scenery is magnificent and we sat atop huge boulders at each sunset, being entertained by shrews, mice, bat eared foxes, hyena, Jameson’s red rock rabbit, springhares, and the best prize of all, two aardvark! There were also some extremely irate elephants who chased a safari vehicle below us, much to our mirth (not funny when you’re the one being pursued though!). The Tuli is also a wonderful birding spot, so there’s something for everyone.

There’s also a four-tented en suite self-catering site in the Tuli called Nokalodi, which is a few metres from the Limpopo River. Various owls, birds and tree life abound in the site’s huge masahtu tree. We spotted leopard tracks in the camp most mornings and we had been alerted to their presence by all and sundry. The guides are excellent and very knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble.

There are lots of options in this corner of Botswana, one of them also being the Mapungubwe National Park, which is on the South African side of the Limpopo and not far from the Tuli Safari Lodge. Here’s hoping that some of the Travel Africa readers will consider a visit to that part of the world soon. Thanks for a great magazine and I look forward to each edition.

From the editor:

We agree that the Tuli Block is a fantastic safari destination for all budgets. We hope you managed to get a hold of our last edition, which included an inspiring feature on the region (‘Tuli’s guarantee’, Ed 53, Winter 2010/11). If you (or other readers) would like to read Marcus Leach’s story, a text-only version is available free online (www.travelafricamag.com). In all its colour and glory, the back issue is also available to purchase online.
